Here I am, staring at a prompt for a self-introduction letter: “Who are you?”
I had to ask myself—when was the last time I even faced a question like this? Goodness, it feels like an eternity. It honestly feels like something I last wrestled with back in elementary school Korean class. You know, back when we had to fill in those cloud-shaped blanks inside a cartoon skull for a “brain map” activity, or cut out paper apples and glue them onto a “mind-opening apple tree.”
To ease the confusion, I shifted the question slightly: Was I this bewildered back then when asked to define myself?
Suddenly, a memory flashes. A core memory from a time when life was beautifully simple stirs from somewhere deep within. I remember coming home from school, opening the front door, and being greeted by my mother’s warm smile and an embrace. We’d sit together and quietly chat about how my day went, all while the drowsy autumn afternoon sun slashed diagonally across our wide living room, splitting the space into thick blocks of light. I used to live off that single fleeting moment—surviving days, months, and a whole year on just that warmth. That was how naive and pure those days were.
When exactly did life become so overwhelming and complex? Or maybe, we are still living off these tiny, simple fragments of memories, but we’ve just lost the willingness to accept them.
So, I’m putting them on display—the very pieces of memory that define me and reshape who I am, one by one. Someone might look at this and find it embarrassing; someone else might even find it off-putting. But honestly, who cares? These are the things I truly love, and the things I want to hold onto forever.Welcome to my collection of memory fragments—modest, yet unashamed (or at least, striving to be).
